Government & International Relations
Cyprus is an independent sovereign republic with a democratic presidential system of government. An independent judiciary, and the legal system that is based on the British system of law, with an advanced and reliable Land Registry Office, upholds individual rights. Cyprus is also a member state of the United Nations and the Commonwealth and, as of 1 May 2004, also a full member of the European Union.
Outcome of EU Membership
The island’s EU membership now allows for increased freedom of movement of European citizens to the island, as well as freedom to establish businesses and take up employment. Existing legal constraints on ownership of freehold property, foreign investors and company residential purchases will gradually be lifted, which will, in turn, mean stable and increasing returns on property investments on the island.
Economy & Banking
Cyprus enjoys a prospering, stable economy. With full employment and rapid growth, Cyprus ranks among the high-income countries of the world, while the cost of living compares favourably to that of the UK and other European countries, ensuring a high standard of living.
Also based on the British system, banks in Cyprus offer advanced and efficient services to individuals and businesses across the island, with branches overseas. Many international banks also have networks throughout the island.
Quality of Life
With a remarkably low crime rate, 1/6 of the European average, Cyprus offers the security and peace of mind that is key to feeling comfortable in your new home. According to Interpol statistics, Cyprus’ crime rate is only 6% of the UK’s crime rate, 8% of Germany’s, 30% of Portugal’s and Spain’s, 5% of Sweden’s and 12% of Norway’s.
Goods and services in Cyprus are more reasonably priced but of the same standard as their European counterparts. Local markets offer an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and meat at a fraction of European prices, while large, modern supermarkets store a full range of local and imported goods and delicacies.
Climate, Language & People
Cyprus enjoys one of the healthiest climates in the world, with mild winters, long, warm summers and over 330 days of sunshine a year, allowing residents to enjoy outdoor activities all year round. English is widely spoken, allowing foreign residents to easily blend in and feel at home
Healthcare & Insurance
Medical services in Cyprus are of a very high standard and affordable. Most doctors have been educated and trained in the UK, Europe or the USA, and provide consultations.
Education
In addition to public schools, Cyprus also has private elementary and secondary schools for international pupils. Higher education is offered at the University of Cyprus and other private colleges, where accredited courses in undergraduate and graduate studies are taught in English, with a wide range of fields available to choose from.
International Connections
The island’s international airports in Larnaca and Paphos, and the ports of Larnaca and Limassol, connect Cyprus to all the countries of the world. Over 30 airlines, led by the island’s national carrier, operate regular flights to more than 260 international destinations, while shipping services, including cruise lines and cargo, are provided by the island’s merchant fleet, the fifth largest in the world.
Communications
Cyprus’ telecommunications facilities rank third highest in the world. Direct dial access to over 200 countries is provided, as well as modem and cellular phone networks and services, and advanced Internet connections, including ISDN.
Radio, TV and satellite services are readily available in English, with many international print media available in local newsagents.
Driving
As in the UK, cars in Cyprus are right-hand drive and are driven on the left side of the roads, while signs are displayed in both Greek and English. Short distances between towns and a well-developed network of roads and motorways make traveling on the island convenient and safe. A valid driver’s license from your home country or an international driver’s license permits you to drive legally in Cyprus.
